Class Notes Tuesday Sept. 10 2013 Today: pick apart the course tittle and description to give an idea of what gender perspectives is all about Learning objectives: -describe what a gender perspective is about -locate themselves with regard to feminism -understand how research can be feminist Gender Perspective -involves looking at the different relations of power that structure everyday life -acknowledges gender as a basis of social difference that conditions the way we experience the world -goes beyond gender to map the entire system of power relations that structure the social fields in which we act -does not assume that gender is the most important part of equality etc. -all types of things are social differences that make a difference in power/relations Gender -the social and cultural constructions of masculinities and femininities -these constructions include the set of characteristics, roles and behavior patterns that distinguish women from men which are constructed not biologically but socially and culturally -a relation of social inequality based on social constructions of masculinity and femininity -gender is not only an access of social difference -gender is attained socially before you are even born (e.g. my baby is going to be my little princess, he will be the captain of the soccer team) The “F” word… Feminism -called this because there are many meanings attached to it -holds a connotation of being radical (at least to society) -Class results: Do you consider yourself a feminist? 44% No 43% YES 13% OTHER feminism is: -a point of view -a strong viewpoint for female equality -this viewpoint involves a woman -woman who want to be equal to men -who are passionate about their beliefs -quality **
