SOC 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: False Consciousness, Class Consciousness, Anomie
Document Summary
Society refers to people who interact in a defined territory and share a culture. Karl marx believe that social conflict arises from the positions of owners and workers in the production of material goods. Max weber believes that the power of ideas shape society. Emilie durkheim believes that modern and traditional societies go together. Lenski uses the term socio-cultural evolution which is a term used to describe changes in society that occur as society gains new technology. Societies with simple technology have little control over nature, so they can only support a small population. Societies with complex technology such as cars and cellphones can support hundreds and millions of people in far more affluent ways of life. Societies can be described in 5 ways based on their technology: hunting and gathering, horicultural and pastoral, agrarian, industrial, and post-industrial societies. In the most simple societies, people live by hunting and gathering.
