Critical of family as supporting capitalism, but non-capitalist societies also have families and family problems. Families carry out societal functions not easily accomplished by other means. Symbolic interaction theory : opportunities for sharing activities helps build emotional bonds, parents act as authority figures, this limits their closeness to young children. Social exchange theory courtship and marriage are forms of negotiation: gender roles dictate the elements of exchange. Micro level analysis counters structural functional and social conflict visions of the family as an institutional system. Family life is similar for people in the same social and economic categories. Canadians have become less tolerant of extramarital sex and more tolerant of non-marital sex and same sex relations. Families of any racial or ethnic category do not necessarily fit stereotypes.
