SOC 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Social Stratification, Kibbutz, Matriarchy
Document Summary
Gender is more than diferences in how women and men are expected to behave: gender is not sex. Gender is a social class: gender is learned. Gender is also an important dimension of social straiicaion. Where men have tradiionally been and are placed in posiions of power over women to this day. Gender: personal traits and social posiions that members of a society atach to being male or female. Gender straiicaion: the unequal distribuion of wealth, power, and privilege between men and women. We must be careful not to think of social diferences in biological terms. Diferences in physical abiliies, but in athleics the gap is smaller today. Diferences in abiliies relect both biology and socializaion. Also, women have a greater life span. No diference in overall intelligence between males and females. Margaret mead"s research: culture is the key to gender diferences.
