The original lyrics say that the people in ethiopia are so poor that they don"t know its christmas due to suffering. Meant to make people think there is nothing but suffering in africa. May create a stereotype that the people are always like this but may not be true. Don"t see that there is other dimensions to their lives, people are not just sitting around and crying, are trying to fix their problem. Don"t need to pity them, need to join them in their solutions. Pity means rescue and helplessness but the people are trying to help themselves are not helpless.
