Different hand gestures have different implications in different countries. If someone is repeatedly told they have a certain personality they will eventually become that type of person. A major argument in the textbook chapter: our emotional displays are not dictated by purely biology. Rather heavily shaped by unwritten rules called norms. Norms = commonly accepted way of doing things. Some purposes and circumstances in which we manage emotions. When children had low survival rate parents were emotionally prepared for this and didn"t grieve as much. Example: gender patterns in responses to sad stimuli. Men are less likely to cry during sad movies than women. Flight attendants have to manage their emotions. But also their innermost feelings so that the outward display is authentic.
