Mcdonaldization of punishment (ritzer, 1993): moving towards this mcdonaldization in our society. Shows how it can be used in punishment. Efficiency: looking for optimum means to end and fastest and best way to get from a to b. such as drive thru, don"t have to get out of car etc. get through more customers. With punishment; getting more people through the system as quickly as possible. We take less peoples circumstances into account- just want to punish people fast. Best way is to send them to prison. Calculability: quality, portion size, cost, and services offered. Mcdonald"s quantity is used as a measure of quality (99 billion served) thus, meaning your food is great. More people we send to prison the better job we"re doing, think that were being tough on crime. Doesn"t matter what mcdonald"s you go to, you know what to expect, no surprises. Commit crime we know what type of punishment you get, even including mandatory minimum sentences.
