Two types: *informal and formal labelling, formal: done by official agents of social control ex. Doctors who go to med school: ascribed: one where which we are born with and is difficult to change (wrote before civil rights movement) Race, height, gender, sexuality: master status seen as negative can lead to discrimination, can lead to higher levels or surveillance by police or convictions.
