SOC 1500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Juvenile Delinquency, Young Offenders Act, Restorative Justice
Document Summary
Family structure - to explain female delinquency and juvenile delinquency. 3 factors: birth order - can predict delinquency and conforming - 1st born and only children are conforming, looked up to - more often w males than females, youngest born are more delinquent, family size. Smaller - more tension, more supervision, less delinquent. Authoritative: supportive and demanding parents - impart clear standards for children on age of child - are assertive, use discipline methods that are supportive (explaining why behaviour is wrong, and best way to approach it next time) Authoritarian: rejecting & demanding (extremely) - seen in more traditional families where obedience is demanded, use of corporal punishment (physical) - found to produce more aggressive children who mimic the use of physical discipline. Indulgent: permissive or non-directive - supportive and not demanding - not demanding of specific behaviour from children. Indifferent: rejecting & not demanding - needs are not met, can be neglecting - produces very delinquent children.
