Myths and legends: now exist in contemporary forms. Modern witch hunts: police are so sure that they have the right suspect that they develop tunnel vision and end up convicing the wrong person. Neo-classic theory: self control theory (gottfredson) Calculations (people calculate different things according to their personality, social constraints) Self- control (do or do not have self control) Critique: nature of crime, characteristics (not a lot of planning; crimes of opportunity; does not help explain passionate crimes) Deterrence theory: assumes we are all calculators, which is we seek pleasure and avoid pain; harsher penalties allows people avoid those harsher crimes.
