Document Summary
Citizens opinions taken into account; policing as customer service ; attitudes gauge how well police are doing. Older = good job; younger = bad job. Blacks less fabourable view than whites; more likely to be treated unfairly. Hispanics (in us) similar to blacks, but a lesser extent. Other socio-demographic variables are ambiguous (gender, ses, education level, marital status) Negative views: young people, visible minorities, those perceiving neighbourhoods as high in crime and victims of crime. Early contact = lasting effects on relationships with agencies of social control and long-term attitudes and behaviour. Social environment, delinquent subcultures and police contact equally important in explaining perceptions. Minority youth have greater negative views than white youth. Only 1. 6% of youth in hamilton were charged with criminal offence in 2010 (in line with matthews" law) Fred matthews divides youth involvement in crime. 75% of youth are law-abiding, rarely in negative contact with law.
