Mental illness: how do we know? institutional records; formal records kept from practitioners, hospitals, psychiatrists, etc. Perception of stigma people will not seek help because they don"t want to be labelled and are afraid of how they will be treated. Different diagnoses different doctors will give different diagnoses, institutional records are difficult to rely on because at one you may not be diagnosed while at another you may be. Extremely expensive lots of people don"t want to talk about it because of the stigma, under-reporting. Torture to treatment recall, certain definitions of deviance lead to certain forms of social control, for example spiritual deviance = spiritual control or medical deviance = medical control.
