A system of values, attitudes, modes of behaviour and life styles of a social group that is somewhat distinct from, yet nevertheless connected to, dominant culture: influence of durkheim. Subcultures: university of chicago 1920s-40s: influences of anthropology, influence of robert park (1925) Subcultures as (cid:498)normal(cid:499) response to social conditions. Clusters of (cid:498)natural economies(cid:499) with specific norms/values. Degrees of conformity and resistance each sub group has different form of deviance: gang as subcultures thrasher 1927 (book called the gang) Chart cuban gangs in this part of the city. Many young people feel left out of society and feel like they don"t belong and that is what gives life to gangs: taxi dance hall - paul c. cressey. Wanted to know what he would find if he went there. Found that the same women would go out dancing and would dance a lot. Women were paid to keep the men not lonely would move on from guy to guy.
