Objective: deviance is inherent to the act or the person. Should be able to identify and measure these. Be able to categorize the different theories as subjective or objective. Interested in examining how we de ne things as deviant and how de nitions change over time. Labelling, con ict (deviance de ned in the context of the interests of the powerful class), postmodernism. Macro vs micro level sociological theories + examples. Mico-level- what are people saying, how do they make sense of their lives. (sutherland, most of labelling theory, sykes and matza"s techniques of neutralization) Macro-level- large scale emphasis on social systems (con ict, structural-functionalist- Durkheim- deviance may have speci c roles to the function of society- 4 functions of deviance to the system- macro related question. Similarities between durkheim and merton- the social system becoming anomic. Anomie is not a characteristic of a person, but of the social system.
