The media"s primary role is to make claims about problems. They share a non-stop ow of the nature of problems and deviance such as shootings, crimes etc. It is very rare that anyone in the media has a connection with the incident so they are making secondary claims. Reality ( there is a degree of distortion both deliberately and not); essentially the media is not a mirror of reality. The role of the sociologist is to understand the distortion: organizational, there is something about how a news website or newspaper operates, our job is to investigate these organizational issues and understand how they create the distortions. Revenue (to make money; what kind of connection does deviant behaviour have to revenue: the most pro table stories are the ones that bleed (gory) These kinds of things partially determine what claims are heard and in what form. They shape what we hear and shape our reality.
