Give spoiled identity for their beliefs, for what we think they"re thinking. -those who question or leave a religion (heretics and apostates), i. e. ayaan hirsi ali received death threats for criticizing and then leaving islam. -it is so tempting to think people who think differently from us are crazy. -there is in practice some overlap between the two categories (as many mentally ill have strange ideas) -but the two are analytically different though empirically related. -people hold beliefs for causes other than rational (logical proof, evidence) -people look for evidence to support, rather than prove beliefs (and even will fabricate evidence!) Max weber: elective affinity of ideas & groups. Identity needs: common today (sense of superiority or acceptance or a rationalization of their position. -purging: (i. e. communist parties) made a nonperson, just remove them and act like they never existed. -blacklisted: occupational (shit disturber etc, don"t wanna hire u)
