-often stigmatizes ; we fear what we don"t understand. -once, mental problems were seen as acts of gods, in particular, epilepsy, -lehmann intrigued because drug was described as a chemical lobotomy making patients tractable. -also performed lobotomies without informed consent for the cia"s mckultra project. -drug allowed many to lead normal lives, others felt emotionally dead. -all mental illnesses are disorders but not all disorders are illnesses. Dsm. uses disorder for both impairments and illnesses. Difference can be clear, but also a matter of degree. Tourette"s syndrome; epilepsy ; parkinson"s; senile dementia ; amnesia; retardation; autism; attention. Schizophrenia, psychosis ; bipolar mood disorder (manic depression), anxiety disorder ; obsessive. Post-traumatic stress disorder ; personality disorders (borderline, anti-social) - hysteria disease of sudden crying and fear said to be caused by uterus. -need definition that overcomes cultural differences, i. e. case of hu lunacy: craziness caused by full moon (like werewolfism!)
