Document Summary

A sub-culture is a system of values, attitudes, modes of behaviour, and life-styles of a social group that is somewhat distinct from, yet nevertheless connected to, dominant culture : sub-cultures are like a micro-community that exists within society. Social science research on sub-cultures goes back to the university of chicago between the 1920s and 1940s. There were prevalent influences from anthropology in these studies: systematic immersion, observation, and documentation in the sub-culture"s. A good example of a sub-culture, as discussed previously, is street gangs. Predictors of involvement in street gangs are called push and pull factors these are either conditions that propel an individual away from the dominant culture (push), or conditions that attract an individual to the gang (pull) Membership active vs. passive recruitment: passive they ask people they know if they"re interested in joining the gang, active they intimidate people into joining the gang.
