Lecture: Political Parties
Farmer - labour government in Ontario - United Farmers of Ontario
-a context of volatility
-conscription in 1917 for the war (they needed people to stay back to produce food)
-they removed this and got the farm community agitated
-newly formed UFO wins 44 seats and minority governments in 1919
-alliance with independent labour party to govern
-issue of leaderships
Contradictions of the UFO
-hostility towards the old-line parties
-E.C Drury attempt to “broaden out”
-J.J Morison resists: advocates limiting UFO to the “producer class” in society. Why?
-farmers paper got widely read.
-street vs. city people. (they look down on each other) promote and not be so
concerned about catering other sectors
-role of farmers sun
-divisions:
-some opposed to UFO being a party
-opposition to broadening out
-convention backs morrison: co-optation by liberal party pf some members
