Beccaria was the first person to write on paper that crime prevention is most important. Severity of punishment increases with severity of crime. Not opposed to physical punishment, but to be reserved for the most severe crimes. He argued against death penalty, because it was illegal to commit suicide the state should not have the right to take lives either. Panopticon-the prison was structured so the guard was placed in the middle where the prisoners were being watched at all times. Started performing autopsies to explore the differences between those considered deviant and those not. Low forehead, odd teeth, long arms, ears of odd size, sparse facial hair, tattoos, left handed. Hysteria was a disease attributed to women especially when menstruating. Spoke to people and decided their level of intelligence based on that conversation(feeble mindedness)
