Labelling theory
o Origins: symbolic interactionalism
o Born into the social system: we are born into a social system (brought into
a social context)
o Norms and values pre exist you (these norms are already outlined and
part of society you come into it)
o Learn to interact via symbolic communication (esp language)
o Meaning and sense of self are a product of symbolic communication and
exchange: determines on ur reaction to ppl around you (social relations)
o Reality becomes meaningful through symbolic comm (ex raising a child
reading a book)
o Meaning and sense of self are eventually taken for granted
o Shared understanding creates a sense of flow
o Remember: the meaning of the world and sense of self are a product of
social interaction
o Nothing is inherently deviant bc we would have to figure out and talk
about what is vs what isn’t deviant
o Deviance is anything labeled as such via symbolic comm
o What happens when ppl are labeled deviant (what r the effects? Why
does it occur? What happens to their sense of self?)
Primary vs secondary deviance
o How reactions and labels lead to a reorganization redef of self social
pathology
Primary deviance:
o violation of norms not serious, act might be recognized and labelled but
seen as isolated
o Label is not internalized not part of ones self
Secondary deviance
o More serious
o Stronger comm reaction and consistent labelling
o Usually a person of authority labels them as a person who violated the
social norms
o Label is internalized not part of ones self
o Status and social roles organized around deviant identity/self
o Conventional opportunities are limited
Labelling theory
o Labelling can generate a master status: the one role that stands out more
(tell me a bit about urself and u say ur job or ur traits)
o Being deviant eclipses other roles (father artist athlete) other things are
overshadowed by what you’ve done
