Description
Oct 22 Presentation Review – Important Notes to Remember in Social Change Model Paper - title must indicate the social change model - introduction must provide sufficient background material for reader to understand social change objectives and goal - reference to: - figure 1, key variables impacting on educational issue - figure 2 operationalizing the 3 key variables - figure 3 indicating the connecting theories - reference to tables for listing the objectives, targets, resistances and strategies (3 tables) - note Phillips (2013) linking relevant theories to connect the variables to the various change strategies and the ultimate goal Text Ref: Chapter 7 – Changing Organization of Schooling - objectives: - to use organizational concepts to compare schools to other types of enterprises - to examine changes in the interpersonal relations between students and teachers Strategies for Change: Persuasive Strategy - Zaltman & Duncan: “persuasive strategies attempt to bring about change through bias in a manner in which the message is structured and presented” Considerations for Selecting Persuasive Strategies 1. awareness of the change target: introducing the change in a low key manner to avoid conflict 2. degree of commitment: the lower the degree of commitment to change among the target system, the greater the need for persuasive strategies 3. felt needs: a persuasive/reeducative strategy is necessary when the problem is not recognized ie. When certain symptoms aren’t associated with the problem 4. capacity of the client system to accept change: if the client doesn’t have the capacity or resources for change, a persuasive strategy is not useful 5. if the client system has the capacity to sustain change, a persuasive strategy is appropriate - if the capacity for continuation is not present, persuasive strategies aren’t appropriate 6. resources available to the change agent - the fewer the resources available to the change agent that is attractive to the change target, other non power strategies must be used 7. segmentation of the target system - when members of the target system are not at the same stage, the laggards must be persuaded 8. decision making stage - if the target is well into the decision-making stage, a persuasive strategy is appropriate 9. magnitude of change 1 Oct 22 - the larger the change involved, the more likely that it will be perceived as risky - the larger the change involved
