Ferdinand de saussure (1857-1913) wrote about how language works. Media texts treated the same as natural language, means they can be analyzed and evaluated. Signs are arbitrary the word itself does not mean much, but the actually meaning of the word is important. Relation of sign (referent) socially constructed socialized into our language as babies. Concepts (sociological): denotation (sign) other words to mean the same thing connotation (signify) (critical) discourse analysis. Discourse term that refers to communication processes, looking at discourse is a way in which communication happens and how communication processes can create particular meaning. Forms of representation how things are spoken about or written about. 1) examines how people use language in their social life. 2) the relationship between language and the message its sending and a particular social structure.
