Document Summary

Soc 3740 corrections & penology (study of punishment) Why are correctional facilities where mental health patients land. What kind of support and treatments are mental health patients getting inside. Why are we using solitary con nement; has detrimental effects. Cell conditions; whether the physical structure itself is reasonable. Inmate rights; what should inmates be entitled too. Aging population; lots of old people in the jails. It costs a lot of money; tax dollars. Pathways to incarceration: an enormous amount of tax dollars is spent on the correctional system. 2) the public and elected of cials are interested in correction: what happens inside custody is largely hidden. It is a problematic and poorly understood aspect of social life: we need to know what punishment is in order to think about what it can and should be. Correctional service canada must be more transparent about prison deaths. (august, 2016)
