Islamic radicalization is defined as the process by which an individual, or ethnic group
comes to adopt extreme political, social, or religious ideals and aspirations that tend to reject or
undermine contemporary ideas and expressions of the nation (Schoeberl, 2016). As we continue
to endure challenges associated with active shooting situations, specifically when the action is
driven by Islamic extremism, it is evident that newer strategies must be implemented to warn
societies about the people who have become significantly radicalized and pose severe danger to
others (Schoeberl, 2016). Despite great efforts to eliminate Islamic terrorist groups, they have
continued to successfully carry out attacks around the globe, including the United States, the
Middle East, and many more. Radicalization is not primarily a law enforcement problem, as
police can only do so much to protect vulnerable and powerless people from violent extremism
(Schoeberl, 2016). It is important for societies to recognize and report any signs of radicalization
in hopes to eliminate terror and severe violence.
Political or social change, injustice and personal unhappiness, as well as the sense of
wanting to belong to a particular group has proved to play a major role in the radicalization
process, whereas religion has a minor effect (Schoeberl, 2016). Those involved in Islamic
radicalization will adopt specific social, political and religious viewpoints thus neglecting and
rejecting contemporary ideas (Swanson, 2015). Life-altering events, social networks, poverty and
unemployment are also contributing factors that may lure an individual into joining the
radicalization process. Feeling obligated, pressured and scared by future consequences, teenaged
girls are not only approached yet they are promised a better and safer life if they were to join the
Islamic group. The women are convinced that by joining the Islamic group they can make a
greater difference in the world. Throughout class, professor Dubeski emphasized and highlighted
the various push and pull factors that tends to drive teenage girls away and toward Jihad.
