Description

To calculate the variance, you need to use two formulas: for the mean and the variance. That is,
2 2 2 2 2 2
the variance is defined as σ = E(x ) -( E(x)) = E(x ) -μ , then we can calculate E(x ). Given
that p(1)=p(2) and p(3)=p(4)=p(5)=p(6), you have
2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2
E(x )= ∑x p =i i*p(1) +2 *p(1) + 3 *p(3)+ 4 *p(3)+ 5 *p(3)+ 6 *p(3)=
= 5p(1) + 86p(3).
