Statistics is the science of learning from data, and of measuring, controlling and communicating uncertainty -davidian & louis. Study design to plan the collection of data. Parameter want to know something about a large population. Not feasible to collect data on everybody in the population. Take a sample of data from a population. Use statistical methods to analyze the sample data. Provide estimate of the parameter and make inferences (conclusions) about this parameter: looking at data distributions. Data are collected in various ways to answer specific questions. Surveys (online/telephone: political issue, market research, health research. Data are collected for a set of cases (or individuals) and variables of interest are measured. Categorical variables (non numerical: gender, political affiliation, type of residence. Quantitative (numerical) variables: have magnitude, age, height, amount of protein in food item. Example 1. 11 vitamin d levels in adolescent females: Investigator wants to learn about vitamin d levels in healthy adolescent girls.
