Young celebrities have seen this as a way of marketing themselves to young people. Young girls who loved the jonas brothers had to get permission to buy the music and merchandise; that they were pure gives parents a kind of security. For females artists that wear (or wore) purity rings, it allowed them to blur the madonna/whore binary (miley cyrus, selena gomez) The clothing and dancing were sexualized, as were some of the song lyrics, but the public persona was squeaky clean. If purity is a commodity that can be bought and sold, then it has to be marketed. Pop stars wearing purity ring only goes part of the way. An association made possible by attempts to reconcile madonna/whore binary- asked pop stars. In fact, purity is sold as sexy! so embody both sides of this binary. Marketing virginity using sex is a big big business.
