Animal has food handling behaviour that natural selecion can act on. Residual food let at feeding site and consumed at a later ime. May have been a criical step in caching behaviour in birds: security hypothesis. Food brought back to a refuge to be consumed. Uneaten food let in the refuge could be consumed at a later ime. Behaviours to accumulate addiional food items and beter preserve food would be selected for: food envy hypothesis. Individual seeks to maintain possession of a food item. Moves food items between sites to hide it from. Fitness of a cacher is greater than non-cachers compeitors.
