Document Summary
How do abiotic factors influence adaptive capabilities in fishes: the osmo-regulatory compromise, the influence of abiotic factors on fish metabolism. Profuse more lamellae- open capillary networks = pick up more o2 (perfuse more gill sa: more ions in fish versus water (fw)- passively lose more ions. If you want to exercise and pick up more o2, you also lose more ions, same is true for ab regulation: ph of blood is 7. 8, of water is bw 6-7= more protons in water than fish. This is presumably adaptive to the frequent hypoxia that occurs in its ion-poor environment. Look across a variety of species- does compromise match habitat where fish has evolved/lifestyle: hypoxia-intolerant like rainbow trout- compromise is real and very important. If you live in ion-poor waters, have evolved mechanisms to deal with this compromise very well. Exam questions will test whether we understand material versus memorizing. Optimize gill for ion base balance or oxygen uptake compromise.
