o|82 o Cytokinesis – begins before mitosis ends, cytoplasm is divided in 2 Combination of 2 phases produces 2 genetically identical daughter cells  Only eukaryotes go through mitosis Errors occur only 1/100000 cell divisions Cell division is a continuum of dynamic changes 5 main stages of mitosis: Prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase Usually but not always followed by cell division (cytokinesis) Mitotic spindle = a football-shaped structure of microtubules that guides the separation of the 2 sets of daughter chromosomes  Spindle microtubules emerge from 2 centrosomes (“microtubule organizing centres”) = clouds of cytoplasmic material that contain 2 pairs of centrioles Interphase Period of cell growth, cell synthesizes new molecules/organelles By G c2ll has doubled its contents and cytoplasm contains 2 centrosomes, each centrosome with a pair of centrioles Chromosomes are duplicated inside nucleus Still in form of chromatin Prophase Changes occur in nucleus and cytoplasm Chromatin becomes tightly coiled in nucleus, forming discrete chromosomes (can be seen with light microscope) Each duplicated chromosome appears
