c98 Bio 1010 Chapter 4 Section 4.2 – The small size of cells relates to the need to exchange materials across the plasma membrane. Cells are microscopic Logistics of carrying out cell functions appear to set lower & upper limits on cell size. Cell must be large enough to house enough DNA, protein molecules, & structures to survive/produce. Maximum size of cell is influenced by geometry – surface area large enough to service the volume of the cell. Active cells have huge amount of traffic across outer surface. Chicken egg cell – Is not as active, when embryo starts to develop, egg is divided into many microscopic cells, each bounded by membrane allowing flow of oxygen, nutrients, & wastes across surface. Surface-to-Volume Ratio Large cells have more surface area then small cells. Large cells have less surface area relative to volume than small cells.
