OS82 Bio 1010 Section 20.9 – Diverse molluscs are variations on a common body plan. Phyla Mollusca have Mollusc – snails, slugs, oysters, clams, octopi, & squids. o Soft bodied animals (molluscus – soft) but are protected by a hard shell. o Inherited several features from ancestors. o Have a true coelom. o Have a circulatory system – an organ system pumping blood & distribute nutrients & oxygen throughout body. FIGURE 20.9A ----------------------------------------- -- o Basic body plan of a Mollusc with 3 main parts: foot, visceral mass, & mantle. o A muscular foot Functions in locomotion. o A Visceral mass Contains most internal organs. o A mantle Is a fold of tissue draping over the visceral mass & secretes a shell in molluscs such as clams & snails.
