Pain: subjective perception, the brain"s interpretation of sensory information transmitted along pathways that begin at nociceptors, highly individual and multidimensional, can vary with a person"s emotional state. Ex: trpv1 channels channels: respond to damaging heat from a stove or other source and to capsaicin (chemical that makes chili peppers burn) Ex: trpm8: opposite end of temperature spectrum from trpv1, responds to both cold and menthol, why mint flavoured foods feel cold. Primary sensory neurons from nociceptors: terminate in dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Nociceptor activation pathways: reflexive protective responses that are integrated at the level of the spinal cord (spinal reflexes) Muscle pain from ischemia lack of adequate blood flow reducing oxygen supply: occurs during myocardial infarction heart attack. Perception of pain is subject to modulation at several levels in the nervous system.
