Living organisms constantly receive and interpret signals from their environment: cells of multi-cellular organisms receive signals from other cells, including signals for cell division and differentiation. If single celled organism, entirely reliant on chemical signals on chemical environment; signalling is perception of all chemical cues. The majority of cells in our bodies must constantly receive signals that keep them alive and functioning: key concepts: Many signaling systems have very similar or related steps the same signaling system can lead to very different responses in different cells or different organisms. Cells respond differently bc they have different repertoire of receptors. By studying the mechanisms of cell signaling, we can understand the basis of many diseases and develop new strategies for therapy. Cells need to know if they need to divide or differentiate, or die; cells are not doing this unilaterally, they are reliant on the signals they are getting form their environment.
