Document Summary

Today we will be examining the basic form and function of plants including the above ground parts shoots, stems and leaves. We will also examine the three tissue systems. Growth is an increase in the size of the plant and this is represented by the growth of individual organs and these include the root system and the shoot system (stems and leaves). Growth is different in plants and animals; with plants growth is mostly indeterminant and with animals it is mostly determinant. Indeterminant means that it does not have a set end point and it continues for the life of the plant. Whereas for animals they grow to a certain size and then their growth plates close and so on (max growth is predetermined. Thus for plants this means continuous growth till they die (year after year they will grow new organs). For animals growth is not continuous when max height is reached growth ceases.
