Document Summary

Over 450 million years ago the ancestral algae started to adapt to the dry land and two major groups evolved. There are ten phyla of the extant plants (no need to memorize the following image but will need to know the major groupings). These are small plants generally restricted to marshy environments and require some sort of link to water. I. e. include hornworts, liverworts, thalloids liverworts and mosses. Theses are sometimes are referred to was tracheophytes because sometimes they have water conducting cells. This means they could deal with drier environment in some parts of their life cyle unlike the bryophytes. In one phase of their life cycle they have vascular tissue (i. e. xylem and phloem). Also sometimes called tracheophytes the trachea refers to the tracheid which are water conducting cell type, the phyte refers to plants. The origin of land plants is approximately 450 mya or may be even 475 mya.
