Document Summary
Mostly lived in villages outside the city where farmers left to tend their fields. Even if in city - very connected to earth and rural roots. The countryside was alive with divinities: stack piles of stones with a large one on top - holy site to offer to the gods. Hermes - or a local hero may attach to that site: ghost stories - in greeks - heroes who were close to the earth may walk at night. Ghost of orestes wondered attica at night, beat people and took their cloaks. A ghost had to be offered a virgin maiden every year, but at last, driven away: every groove and spring was inhabited. Starys - half man/beast - dionysus - fertility spirits - in grooves. Centaurs - half man/bull - actually half horse - spirits of rivers. Nymphs - spring, pools, forests, caves - from ouranous: threshed their grain on circle threshing floors which would be alters to the gods.
