Amphitryon goes to war and while he is gone zeus visits alcmene, and enjoys himself so much that he extends the night for three days. Amphitryon soon arrives home and sleeps with alcmene too: she shows no real passion and when amphitryon asks why, she explains that he wore her out the previous night. Amphitryon consults tiresias about whom the imposter was and is informed that his son will be the son of zeus. Note: in some versions, amphitryon tries to kill alcmene! When herakles was nearly due, hera asked zeus to make the next born child a great king: )eus agreed a(cid:374)d hera held (cid:271)a(cid:272)k herakles" (cid:271)irth a(cid:374)d sped up the birth of eurystheus, the king of tiryns. Alcmene gave birth to herakles, son of zeus, and iphicles, son of amphitryon.
