Orbits: are pyramidal, bony cavities in the facial skeleton with their bases (orbital openings) directed anterolaterally and their apices, posteriomedially. The orbits contain and protect the eyeballs and their muscles, nerves and vessels together with most of the lacrimal apparatus (ability to cry). The orbit has a base, four walls and a apex. 7 bones that contribute to orbit: ethmoid, frontal, lacrimal, maxilla, palatine, sphenoid, zygomatic. Lesser wing of sphenoid bone, superior and anterior to optic canal. Tendon passes through trochlea to insert into sclera, deep to sr. Cn 1 sensory smell olfactory nerves, are in the cribiform plate (no longer smell) Cn 2 - sensory vision optic nerves, found in optic canal. Cn 3 motor role oculomotor ciliary muscles, sphincter pupillae, intrinsic muscles of eye (eye movement) Cn 4 motor role trochlear innervates superior oblique muscle of eye.
