In order to standardize communication between anatomists across the world a standard point of reference was established. The anatomical position is one in which a person stands erect with arms at the sides and palms facing forward. From this position the following directional terms are universally used: Close to the surface generally visible under the skin. Away from the surface generally not visible under the skin.
