Your social group Cross- cultural (sociocultural approach) 1b: The Scientific Method: − Linguistics is a science so it uses the scientific method − Scientific research in linguistics proceeds, systematically through a series of steps Observation: − Ex: it seems harder to do things at uncomfortably high temperatures (less effective at doing things) − Causal observation about the world Problems with Relying Only on Personal Observations: − Restricted to the observers’ experiences (risking an incorrect conclusion because of observer bias) − Observer bias: 1. What’s true in the observers’ experience may not be true in general 2. The observer might have perceived events incorrectly (relies on brain and mind but can have errors) 3. The observer might misremember their experiences (in past), causing them to draw wrong conclusions − Don’t want to build this science based solely on personal observations because we can make mistakes in out interpretations of things that happen around us What is a Variable? − Any factor that varies in quantity or type − Ex: gender, age, height, int
