As capitalism grew, workers grouped themselves into unions to protect their common economic and political interests. Industrialization affected the growth of unions, increasing the demographic diversity of workers (men and women) in the past 150 years. Working class - not just those who work for wages. It also includes all those who depend on wages for survival (i. e. family) and is not dependent on the level of income. Labour-power - the workers" capacity to work - this is in exchange for wages. Karl marx - german philosopher - workers and employers freely and willingly enters into a bargain in which labour is exchanged for wages. Class injury - refers to working-class jobs being culturally devalued, and is subject to ridicule and scorn. Iris marion young - social position that allows workers the little opportunity to have free-will in the workplace - developing skills, autonomy, creativity, judgment, expertise, authority, respect. Mitigation of inequities often rely on unions: collective bargaining and agreements.
