LING 1200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 50: Reinforcement, Operant Conditioning Chamber
Document Summary
Behaviours that are punished will decrease in frequency. (ex: skinner box rat pushing lever releases food=increased frequency of lever pushing) Neutral: neither positive or negative consequence, behaviour will not change in frequency. Reinforcement: positive consequence, behaviour will increase in frequency. (positive does not mean good it means more) Punishment: negative consequence, behaviour will decrease in frequency. Primary reinforcers: satisfy biological needs. (ex: food, water, warmth) primary punishers: cause basic biological discomfort. Secondary reinforcers: learned rewards through association with more basic biological reinforcers. (ex: money, trophies, praise) Secondary punishers: learned punishments through association with more basic biological punishments. (ex: criticism, fines, insults) Positive reinforcement: when a reward follows some behaviour, behaviour will increase in frequency. Negative reinforcement: when something unpleasant is removed after some behaviour, behaviour will increase in frequency. (ex: punch in the arm leads to giving away lunch money) Positive punishment: when a punishment follows some behaviour, behaviour will decrease in frequency.
