Ways to look at the microbiome: culture based method (not that informative, genetic sequencing of 16s rrna, gives us compositional confirmation of the bacteria there. Microbiome is linked to body site alpha diversity - diversity measurement and evenness of the diversity (bar graphs) beta diversity - difference in diversity between sites/groups (plots) Things that influence your microbiome: locations - wehre you live, the foods you eat - vegan, omnivore. These metabolites are used to community between bacteria, but can also cause inflammation. Hiv 101: destroys the t cells over a latency period, the latency period can be from 2 to 10 years. Bv: cervical cancer, pre term birth, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, increased risk of sexually transmitted infections. How does the microbiome affect host immunity : majority of infections were coming from the polymicrobial vaginas, 5x increased risk of acquiring hiv.
