Dimerization of monomers bring transposon ends together. Transposase bound at one end cuts the dna at the other end leaving free 3" ends. Free 3" end attacks phosphodiester bond on other strand forming 3"- 5" phosphodiester hairpins: removal of transposon from dna. Transposase binds to target dna, cuts the two hairpin ends again, and 3" ends attack phosphodiester bonds 9 bp apart in target dna. 5" ends of target dna ligate to 3" ends of transposon.
