People live with pain for 6 years on average and have tried about 2. 4 prescribed treatments. 27% of paients have not yet received a diagnosis. Most visits to er are due to pain but only a third of ordered meds are given, half of paients are let in moderate/severe pain ater surgery. Only 30% of chronic pain can be decreased with convenional meds such as: nsaids, neuropathic meds, neuroellepics, opiates, oral, epidural, patches, central line. Observe physical and emoional cues of pain. Use pain scale of your insituion (numbers, faces) Learn techniques to enhance efects of pain meds: relaxaion, guided imagery, therapeuic touch. Does not need much supervision because it infuses slowly. Used to treat dehydraion, mostly in elderly. Iv med given rapidly to decrease the response ime. Dose given at the beginning of a treatment. Quickly achieves the therapeuic concentraion in the body. Medicaion delivered across skin into systemic circulaion.
