The moral community must be expanded to include all creatures whose interests are afected by what we do (human and nonhuman) Remarkable thing is that so many have not abandoned uilitarianism. The classical uilitarian reply is: one thing, and one thing only happiness. Mill: the uilitarian doctrine is that happiness is desirable, and the only thing desirable, as an end; all other things being desirable as means to that end. Hedonism: happiness is the one ulimate good (and unhappiness is the one ulimate evil) Atracive theory because of simplicity and that things that are good or bad are based on how they make us feel. We value all sorts of things for their own sakes. It makes us happy to have them, but only because we already think them as good. We think it is a misfortune to lost them, independently of whether or not the loss is accompanied by unhappiness. In this case, hedonism misunderstands that nature of happiness.
