Relieve tension, apprehension, nervousness – side effects Benzodiazepine family (tranquilizers), effective immediately Valium, Xanax (diazepam, alprazolam) only last hours Mimic GABA Anti-psychotics Reduce hyperactivity, mental confusion, hallucinations, delusions Schizophrenia and mood disorders, decrease dopamine activity Thorazine, Mellaril, Haldol (chlorpromazine, thioridazine, haloperidol) Work gradually Side effects, may cause taradive dyskinesia = neurological disorder, involuntary movements Antidepressants Most frequently prescribed, Tricyclic (Elavil), MAO inhibitors (Nardil), *SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) o *Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft Can also treat panic disorders and anxiety disorders Newer class – SNRIs (Venlafaxine and duloxetine) Mood Stabilizers Control bipolar mood swings – lithium – dangerous side effects A
