Lived in vienna, austria at the turn of the 20th which became a popular place for psychology. Influenced literature, art and western pop culture. In addition to those influences, freud founded the fields of psychiatry and clinical psychology. Initially a neurobiologist, whose main contribution was his successful search for elusive eel testicles. When he focused on treating mental disorders, modern brain imaging technology and psychiatric medications were not available. So, freud started the long tradition of psychologists trying to improve people"s mental health through lengthy discussions. Psychodynamic theory : iceberg description where the conscious is contact with the outside world and the unconscious is difficult to retrieve material; well below the surface of awareness. Freudian slips: when you actually say something you didn"t mean to see is a description of what the unconscious mind was trying to interpret. Psychological problems might arise from conflict between our conscious and unconscious minds. -mental tug of war.
